It fits an integration problem
The founder still translates every product question for developers and every technical decision back to the business. Vendors deliver pieces, priorities move, and nobody owns whether the complete release works as intended.
It does not fit every leadership gap
Hire permanently when the company needs a full-time executive with organizational authority, long-term team building, budget ownership, security accountability, or continuous availability. Commission a focused build when the direction is ready and the problem is simply delivery capacity.
Define the remit before the title
Write down decision rights, time allocation, meeting cadence, implementation expectations, status reporting, escalation, and what remains with the founder. “Fractional CTO” without those boundaries is only an ambiguous title.
Choose by the missing responsibility
- Unclear opportunity: Direction Sprint.
- Defined release without delivery ownership: Focused Product Build.
- Existing team with disconnected product and technical decisions: Fractional Product & Technology Lead.
- Permanent executive and organizational responsibility: internal hire.
